چکیده

As part of a wider study into high internal phase emulsions, we have prepared and studied by SANS and USANS the structure of an unstable emulsion consisting of 90% by volume saturated ammonium nitrate dispersed as micron-scale droplets in hexadecane, stabilised by the surfactant Pluronic L92. Similar emulsions produced using polyisobutylene-based surfactants, reported earlier, are highly stabilised by a significant number of surfactant rich reverse micelles a few nanometres in diameter in the oil phase. The aqueous-oil droplet interfaces are coated with a monolayer of surfactant, while a very small amount of surfactant is aggregated into micron-scale surfactant-rich objects. In contrast, the Pluronic emulsion contains an insignificant number of reverse micelles and a complex multilayered interface between oil and aqueous phases. Now, the great majority of added surfactant is in the form of micron scale, fractally linked, blocks of lamellar phase at the aqueous-oil droplet interfaces. The lamellar phase can be characterised by the Bragg peaks observed in three different isotopic contrasts by SANS. We attribute the shear instability of the Pluronic emulsion to the more hydrophilic nature of the surfactant which causes both depletion of reverse micelles in the oil phase, and aggregation into the blocks of lamellar phase. r 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Neutron scattering study of the structural change induced by photopolymerization of AOT/D2O/dodecyl acrylate inverse microemulsions.

Small-angle and ultrasmall-angle neutron scattering (SANS/USANS) measurements were used to determine the structural changes induced by photopolymerization of AOT/D2O/(dodecyl acrylate) inverse microemulsion systems. Scattering profiles were collected for the initial microemulsions and the films resulting from photopolymerization of the oil phase. The SANS data for the microemulsions were modele...

Reduction and analysis of SANS and USANS data using IGOR Pro

A software package is presented for performing reduction and analysis of smallangle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (USANS) data. A graphical interface has been developed to visualize and quickly reduce raw SANS and USANS data into oneor two-dimensional formats for interpretation. The resulting reduced data can then be analyzed using model-independent methods ...

Extraction of Acetaminophen from Aqueous Solution by Emulsion Liquid Membrane Using Taylor-Couette Column

A study on the extraction of Acetaminophen (ACTP) which is also known as paracetamol, from aqueous solution by emulsion liquid membrane process using Taylor-Couette Column (TCC) was investigated. An ELM consists of three phase system which are the external, membrane and internal phases. The external phase containing the ACTP aqueous solution to be treated. Basically, the internal and membrane p...

Extraction-Stripping Patterns during Co-Extraction of Copper and Nickel from Ammoniacal Solutions into Emulsion Liquid Membranes Using LIX 84I®

Extraction of nickel and its co-extraction with copper from ammoniacal media into emulsion liquid membrane systems (ELMs) was investigated using LIX 84I as the carrier. Measurement of the solute stripped in the internal phase of emulsion opened a new dimension in the study of the ELM extraction processes. The effect of operating parameters such as feed pH, initial feed concentration, and treat ...

Effect of Dispersed Phase Volume Fraction on Physical Stability of Oil-in-Water Emulsion in The Presence of Gum Tragacanth

Background: The dispersed phase volume fraction plays key role in oil-in-water emulsion stability by different mechanisms like partial flocculation, depletion flocculation and bridging flocculation. Since the mentioned mechanism is affected by emulsifier concentration presented in system, the major aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dispersed phase volume fraction on physical st...
